A Painful Lesson in Division

An old (from 2005) LA Times article that I had never read before about the racial integration that came to Inglewood in the 1970s. An interesting read. I really wonder what an “updated” history of Inglewood would look like, one that takes into account the arrival Latin American immigrants in the 1980s. Some things of note:

“Right where the Forum was breaking ground on Prairie, I remember all the white fathers lined up with their guns, and blacks coming down Manchester with their guns, as vivid as if it was yesterday,” Beam said.

By 1970, the city’s schools had 2,500 black children among 14,000 students, but they were clustered on a handful of campuses. Inglewood High had only 17 black students, while Morningside High had more than 600.

….

But by then, there was a new threat on campus. Violent street gangs had made their way to Inglewood from South Los Angeles. “In ninth and 10th grade we had to worry about the white kids,” Lewis said. “When we got to 11th grade, we had to worry about the Crips.”

Inglewood school board candidates try to build platform for recovery:

Inglewood elections are coming up April 2. While researching the candidates for Board of Education, come to find out that all three seats are now running unopposed, due to two candidates pulling out of the election. What gives?

Two-term incumbent, Arnold Butler, is running unopposed for seat 1. Incumbent Trina Williams resigned seat 2 in January, leaving candidates Carliss Richardson-McGhee and Mariana Prado on the ballot. Recently, Prado withdrew.

In the race for seat 3, incumbent Alena Giardina is not seeking a second term. This leaves Margaret Richards-Bowers as the sole candidate since LaDeirdre Wilson has also withdrawn from the race.

Our pals at the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation pass on news that the

forever-in-limbo Fox Inglewood has been recommended for designation to the National Register of Historic Places by California’s State Historical Resources Commission. The Fox has been closed since the mid-’80s, but is “in an amazingly good state of preservation,” according to the LAHTF, which has been pushing to have it turned into a multi-purpose venue for the city. Meanwhile, take a little look around up above.

INGLEWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Police are increasing their efforts to find a 61-year-old Inglewood man who has been missing since Tuesday.

Laurice Mack Thomas was last seen on Aug. 28 at his home on 78th Place, Inglewood police said.

Thomas suffers from numerous medical conditions, requires medication and walks with a cane, officials said.

“His medical issues have raised concerns that he may be lost or even injured,” police said in a statement.

He is described as a black male, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 200 pounds. He has short gray hair, dark eyes, a medium complexion and wears glasses.

Anyone with information should call the Inglewood Police Department at (310) 412-5211.
